Government medical colleges in India are the institutions which are funded and managed by the central or state governments. Private medical colleges are the institutions which are managed by private trust, societies or universities. These colleges are known for their modern infrastructure and advanced learning facilities however, have higher tuition fees compared to government colleges.
Deemed universities are private or public institutions that have been granted the status of ‘deemed-to-be university’ by the University Grants Commission (UGC). They can set their own fee structure and admission policies by following the guidelines set by regulatory bodies.
AFMC colleges are the specialized institutions governed by the Ministry of Defence. These provide medical education to train students for defence services. NEET UG is the accepted medical entrance examination for undergraduate medical education in Armed Forces Medical Colleges; however, admissions are conducted by the AMFC authority itself.

To secure a seat in the top medical college in India, candidates have to clear the medical entrance examinations. The medical entrance exams to be cleared are listed below.
The NEET UG is a national level medical entrance exam conducted by the NTA for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other undergraduate medical courses in government, private, deemed universities and central institutions across India. It is the only entrance test for medical undergraduate admissions in India, including AIIMS and JIPMER.
NEET UG exam is conducted in offline mode where candidates have to answer a total of 180 questions from class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Qualified candidates are eligible for the NEET counselling and state counselling.
The NEET PG is a national level entrance exam conducted by the NBE for admission to MD, MS and PG Diploma courses in medical colleges across India. NEET PG exam is conducted once a year in computer-based mode. The postgraduate medical exam assesses a candidate’s knowledge for MBBS subjects. Qualified candidates are eligible for All India NEET PG counselling and state quota counselling.
The INI CET exam is a national level postgraduate medical entrance exam conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi for admission to MD, MS, MCh (6 years), DM (6 years) and MDS courses. It serves as a single common entrance test for all INIs including AIIMS campuses, JIPMER Puducherry, PGIMER Chandigarh and NIMHANS, Bengaluru. The exam is held twice a year (January and July session) in computer-based mode.
The INI SS is a national level entrance examination conducted by AIIMS, New Delhi for admission to DM, MCh and MD super speciality courses offered by Institutes of National Importance. The exam is held twice a year (January and July sessions) in computer based mode. INI SS is conducted for candidates who have already completed their MD, MS or DNB in relevant specialities.
